Shelley Duvall, the saucer-eyed actress known for her iconic roles in films by Robert Altman, including "The Shining," has died at the age of 74, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Born July 7, 1949 in Fort Worth, Duvall grew up around Houston. Her father, Robert, was a cattle auctioneer turned real estate developer. Duvall began her acting career in the early 1970s, appearing in Altman's "Brewster McCloud" and "M*A*S*H." She went on to star in a string of Altman films, including "Nashville" (1975), "3 Women" (1977), and "A Wedding" (1978).

Duvall's performance as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's horror classic "The Shining" (1980) cemented her status as a cult film icon. Her portrayal of the terrified wife trapped in a remote hotel with her unhinged husband remains one of the most memorable and chilling in cinematic history.
