WEB FORMULA 1 LENOVO CHINESE GRAND PRIX 2024 - SPRINT QUALIFYING

WEB China Delivers Drama on F1 Return

Shanghai delivered the unpredictability that was expected as Formula 1 returned to China for the first time since 2019. McLaren's Lando Norris took a surprise pole position for Saturday's Formula 1 sprint at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai during a wet and wild qualifying session.

Norris Takes China Sprint Race Pole from Hamilton

Norris, who finished third in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, took advantage of the wet conditions to clock a time of 1:55.154 on the Shanghai International Circuit. Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton had to settle for second place in his Mercedes, 0.246 seconds behind Norris.

The result was a major upset, as Norris had not been considered a contender for pole position. However, the difficult conditions played to his advantage, and he produced a brilliant lap to secure his first pole position of the season.

The qualifying session was also notable for a number of other surprises. Esteban Ocon of Alpine took third place, ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari and Max Verstappen of Red Bull. Sergio Perez of Red Bull had a disappointing session, qualifying only seventh.

The sprint race will take place on Saturday, with the full race scheduled for Sunday. Norris will start from pole position, with Hamilton alongside him on the front row.
